What the FUSC?

So what’s all the fuss about this year’s sub fusc gown?

Over the last couple of years we’ve worked with our gown supplier to produce an ethically made standard sub fusc gown, however this year they’ve gone one step further and produced a gown (also ethically made) that started life as 18 recycled plastic bottles.

The polyester gown fabric is woven from EnviroThread which is made entirely from post- consumer PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic waste; assessed against the Global Recycling Standard (GRS) Version 3. The bottles are collected, recycled into plastic flakes, then made into plastic chips, extruded into yarn, woven into fabric and made into gowns.  This process aims to reduce the impact on landfill.

We are incredibly excited to be the first university shop to sell a grown made of EnviroThread!!

The standard and recycled undergraduate gowns are on sale at the University of Oxford Shop at 106 High Street and online at oushop.com.  Our Fresher bundle offers include the gown with mortar board and black ribbon or white bow tie; Standard £25 and Recycled £30. Pls note that the bundle discount is automatically applied at the checkout.  Look out for our sub fusc window display at 106 High Street, going live mid September.

More information about sub fusc is published on the University’s website.
